Modeling responsibility based on academic motivation with the mediating role of academic self-efficacy in high school students

Introduction: Responsibility is one of the most important skills that have many effects in different aspects of life. In schools, responsibility can increase the feeling of commitment and adherence to others, compliance with social rules and standards, and understanding of group rules, and can lead to academic progress. The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-efficacy in relation to academic motivation and responsibility in high school students.
Methods: This research was descriptive and correlation type using structural equation method. The statistical population consisted of all high school students in Kermanshah city in the academic year of 2021-2022. In this research, 200 high school students were selected as samples by random sampling. The research tools included Scherer's self-efficacy questionnaire, Vallerand et al.'s academic motivation questionnaire, and Goff's responsibility questionnaire. Data analysis was done using SPSS software version 25 and Smart-Pls software version 3.
Results: The findings showed that self-efficacy plays a mediating role in relation to academic motivation and student responsibility in high school students. It can also be said that 36% of students' responsible behaviors are explained by self-efficacy and academic motivation (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results, to improve the responsibility level of students, the education system should pay attention to the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between academic motivation and responsibility of students in secondary schools.
