Aims: The characteristic which are defined by emotional intelligence can be fertilized by religion. These characteristics can be taught and learned. The present study was done to investigate the significant correlation between religiosity and emotional intelligence among college students.

Methods: This descriptive-correlative study was performed on 551 Governmental, Payam-e-Noor and Azad university students of Rasht City in 2011-12 by multistage cluster sampling method. Data were collected using two questionnaires Emotional Intelligence with four components of "optimism", "understand own and others emotions", "control of feelings" and "social skills" and the Sharifi’s religious beliefs growth. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16 software and independent T and Pearson correlation tests.

Results: Significant correlation was not observed between the mean of "religious beliefs growth" (88.41±17.90) and "emotional intelligence" (52.39±9.07) (p=0.139 r=0.063). But the difference between the scores of male and female students in religious beliefs and the emotional intelligence was significant and it was higher in girls.

Conclusion: There is no positive correlation between religiosity and emotional intelligence of university students.
