Introduction: Marital empathy is one of the key factors in marital satisfaction and stability. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Gottman’s Sound Relationship House-based couple therapy on enhancing marital empathy among Iranian couples.
Method: This study was a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest and three-month follow-up design with a control group. The study population consisted of couples referring to family counseling centers in Shiraz in 2026. A sample of 40 couples (80 individuals) was selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two groups: experimental (n=20 couples) and control (n=20 couples). The experimental group received 10 sessions of couple therapy based on Gottman’s Sound Relationship House model. Data were collected using the 20-item Marital Empathy Questionnaire developed by Joliffe and Farrington (2006). Data were analyzed using ANCOVA and repeated measures ANOVA.
Results: The findings indicated that Gottman’s couple therapy significantly increased marital empathy scores (total, cognitive, and affective) in the experimental group compared to the control group in both posttest and follow-up stages (P<0.001). The effect size was large.
Conclusion: Couple therapy based on Gottman’s Sound Relationship House model can be considered an effective, sustainable, and culturally compatible intervention for enhancing marital empathy among Iranian couples. |
