Background: Since the experience of virtual teaching and administering exams and presenting various assignments in a virtual setting has given the participants of the present study an appropriate attitude to recognize and express its challenges and opportunities, this qualitative study was designed to examine the challenges and opportunities of Iranian university instructors during Covid-19. Methods: For this purpose, a number of faculty members of one of the universities of medical sciences who had taught in the virtual environment during Bahman semester 1399 and Mehr semester 1400 were purposefully selected and participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. After interviewing 13 participants, the data saturation happened and coding was done with three methods of open, axial and selective coding using MAXQDA 2020 software. Results: Based on the findings, virtual learning challenges were listed in 8 categories and 19 components, and opportunities in 9 categories and 17 components. Lack of interaction between instructors and students was mentioned as the main challenge and the possibility of studying and reviewing the uploaded content by the students in the desired opportunities was expressed as the main opportunity. Conclusion: Awareness of the challenges and opportunities of virtual teaching gives instructors a more accurate and realistic picture of the status quo to adopt appropriate strategies in future semesters to improve their teaching process.
