Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on reducing symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and perfectionism in students with academic burnout.
Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included Zahedan University students with academic burnout, of which 80 (40 in the experimental group and 40 in the control group) were selected through purposive sampling. The experimental group underwent 12 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy, while the control group did not receive any intervention. The instruments used included the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Inventory, the Frost Perfectionism Scale, and the Maslash Academic Burnout Inventory. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Findings: The results showed that cognitive behavioral therapy significantly reduced symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (p<0.001), perfectionism (p<0.001), and academic burnout (p<0.001) in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: The results of the study show that cognitive behavioral therapy significantly reduces symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, perfectionism, and academic burnout by correcting dysfunctional thoughts, reducing anxiety, and increasing coping skills. In fact, CBT, by helping the individual identify and reconstruct irrational beliefs, break the cycle of obsession and compulsion, and reduce the pressure caused by perfectionistic standards, lowers the level of negative emotions and academic stress, and as a result, increases the feeling of efficacy and academic motivation. |
