Examining the key competencies of faculty members in order to education for sustainability, case study: Technical and Vocational University

Introduction: Due to the educational and research tasks of the faculty members and their role in the dissemination of science and knowledge, they have played a significant contribution in education for sustainability and their competency and skills are considered as a key element in this field. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examining the key competencies of technical and professional university faculty members in order to education for sustainability.
Methods: The study was carried out with the exploratory mixed method. The participants in this research were 12 specialists and experts who were selected according to the level of theoretical saturation and purposeful sampling method. In the qualitative part, data collection tool was a semi-structured interview. in such a way that by using the method of content analysis, the most key competencies of the sustainability education of faculty members were identified. In the quantitative section, Shannon's entropy technique was used to in order to weighting, measure the importance and ranking of the extracted categories.
Results: Based on the analysis of semi-structured interview data in two stages of open and axial coding, In total, eleven sub-categories and six main categories were identified as the competencies of sustainability education of faculty members in technical and vocational university. in the quantitative section, according to the importance factor obtained from data analysis with Shannon's entropy technique, the categories of meta-transdisciplinary competency, specialized competency, anticipatory competency, social responsibility competency, transcultural competency and environmental competency are more important in order than others.
Conclusions: Based on the research findings, in order to direct the current education of the Technical and Vocational University towards sustainability education, It is necessary to pay attention to the development of the competencies of the sustainability education of the faculty members, and actions should be taken to develop these competences.
