The Role of Dark Triad Personality and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies in Predicting Academic Burnout among Female University Students

Introduction: Students may experience academic burnout in the face of stress due to a lack of resources to carry out their duties.Therefore, it is important to identify the factors that affect it. So, the aim of present study was to investigate the role of dark triad of personality and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in prediction of academic burnout.
Methods: The research method was descriptive- correlation. From female students’ population at Lorestan University in academic year of 1398-1399, a total of 200 students were selected via convenience sampling. Data was collected using Academic Burnout Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire, Dark Triad Personality Scale and analyzed using Pearson correlation and stepwise regression.
Results: Results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between Machiavellianism (P <0.05) and Narcissism (P <0.01) with academic burnout but there is not a significant relationship between Psychopathy and academic burn out (P >0.01). Also, there is a significant positive relationship between positive emotional regulation strategies with academic burnout (P <0.01), and there is a negative significant relationship between negative emotion regulation strategies and academic burnout (P <0.01). Finally, results of stepwise regression analysis showed that negative emotional regulation strategies, positive emotional regulation strategies and Narcissism explain 25 percent of the variance of academic burnout.
Conclusion: Overall, it can be concluded that students by adopting positive emotion regulation strategies are less vulnerable to academic burnout whereas students with narcissistic personality are more exposed to academic burnout.
